Learn how to edit your home page to choose a layout, add or remove page elements, and add descriptive text that will act as an overview for the space.
- [Instructor] In the previous movie, we created our first space, we chose blank space, and as you can see, we have anything but a blank space in front of us when we're done. This is our Home page and it's time to make some adjustments. Having chosen blank space, there are actually sections on this Home page that include a tip here at the top. You can see some content, it's placeholder content, helping us to get started. We have Recent space activity, another section of our Home page, Space contributors, even areas down below to write comments and like this page.
Well, if want to update this and customize it to our own needs, we need to edit, and that's what we're going to do in this movie. We'll go up here to the Edit button and click. And this is going to take us to a different view. Notice the sidebar on the left-hand side, we don't see it. That we can edit separately and we will later on in this course. Right now we're focused on our Home page. And as you can see there are different sections appearing down below. And this is all based on the default layout. Layouts can be adjusted by going up here to our toolbar.
Click the Page layout button. And from here, you'll notice we can add sections, remove sections, and move them around. We can also choose from some preset layouts. The current layout is a Single column section, that's why everything is the full width of the screen here. But you'll notice the next one over allows us to create two columns. Click there and you'll see what that looks like. Everything switched over here on the left, creating some space on the right for additional content. Or if you prefer, two columns with a left sidebar.
So, you get two columns. The left column is not quite as wide as the right side, creating a sidebar effect. And then we can do the same thing with it on the right. We can go with three columns if we wanted to, including three columns that use sidebars on the left and right. Let's go back to the original single column section. We'll keep it like that and make some adjustments. First of all, inside the first section, we see what looks to be a tip, Welcome to your new space! And this is actually macro based.
You can select it by clicking and you'll see some buttons appear. We can go here to Edit, if you wanted to just simply keep it and edit the content, or if you don't need it, click Remove. And we're going to remove this by clicking the Remove button. Now just so you know, there is an Undo button up here, and a Redo button in case you wanted to bring something back. I think we're okay though and in fact, we're going to select all of this content here, click and drag, and remove it as well.
Just hit your Delete key on the keyboard. Now we're left with an empty section where we can type in our own content. So I'm going to go ahead and type in what you see here. Welcome to the User Conference 2018 space. Our User Conference scheduled for August in 2018 in London, UK will be our largest undertaking to date. Leaving a space, so hitting Enter a couple of times, you can add this second sentence here, indicating that the space is dedicated to this project and it's a place where team members are going to be able to come to create, organize and collaborate on User Conference related work.
It's a good idea to have some kind of information on your Home page that tells people about the space. Now if you don't want the extra space underneath, you don't have to have it, you can hit your Backspace key to take it out. I like the space in between these two sentences, and I think that's it for now. We'll keep the Recent space activity. Remember, we can remove sections if we want to, add sections later on, and then move the around. So, down below, you'll see some buttons now. We have some options here.
Update is going to save our changes. Notice the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + S. Save and close is going to save a draft and actually close the Editor. We can preview this though before we save it. Click Preview to see what your new Home page looks like. Just takes a moment, and you can see what that looks like. So, there's our content at the top. You can see the recent activity, Space contributors. We might need a little extra space between these sections. So let's go back now down to the bottom-right corner and click Edit.
So, I think maybe that extra space that we took out, we can hit Enter to create the space. And let's just simply update now to save our changes, and we'll see what we have so far. Notice User Conference 2018 Home page. There's the content telling people about the space, and then the sections that we chose to keep. Now we can spice this up and we will. For example, we could use themes to make it look better. We could add imagery if we wanted to.
These are all things we're going to do with our Home page. But at any time, remember, you can come to the Home page or any other page we create for that matter, and click Edit to make those adjustments.
