- It comes as a surprise to many that government remains one of the most important centers of innovation in the United States and many other nations. After all, in some form whether directly or indirectly, government is responsible for the internet, for GPS, various space programs, that continue to generate high volumes of derivative innovation, hard disks and touch screens, and so much more. National governments, rather than private industry, have the scale, time, resources, risk profile, and convening power to make big things happen. But while national governments have often been at the forefront of innovation, local governments have lagged. They mostly haven't had the resources and its seldom been a priority, but times are changing. This may be a classic case of necessity. Without significant urban innovation, our cities cannot thrive, and in fact may be subject to real problems in the future.
