The emergence of smart cities
- With the majority of humans now living in an urban setting and many millions more joining each year, we must ask ourselves how ready our cities are to provide a good quality of life for everyone. With some analysis, the answer is sobering. In many cases, cities are struggling to keep up with housing needs, with infrastructure maintenance for roads and bridges, with adequate health services, with environmental needs, with efficient public services, and much more. The challenges are enormous, but so, too, are the opportunities. More than ever, technology is playing a role in making our cities more efficient, more connected, more intelligent in how they function, and for the first time data is being used in significant ways to inform decision-makers and spark innovation. I'll talk more about that later.
