- [Voiceover] Hello, I'm Oliver Schinkten, and thank you for joining me in this course on digital citizenship. We are in the digital age and there are over three billion people who use the internet. The internet and technology have become an integral part of our school, work and everyday life. The opportunities that the internet provides us with are truly amazing. We can connect with like-minded people from around the world, collaborate online, and store projects in the cloud. We can order things online and have them shipped to our doorstep, send instant messages, pictures, videos and more to people thousands of miles away.

We can organize all of our classroom resources on a learning management system which engages students both inside and outside of the classroom. And we can do a whole lot more. Technology gives us great power. But with great power comes great responsibility, and technology is no exception. It is important for all of us to learn more about the appropriate use of technology. This is the concept of digital citizenship. In this course we'll explore important topics such as creating a positive digital footprint, digital etiquette, including important issues such as cyberbullying and appropriate behavior in online communities, the issue of the digital divide and the implications it has.

As well as digital commerce, becoming safe and responsible online consumers. We'll also discuss our online rights and responsibilities including important issues like online research, plagiarism and copyright infringement as well as digital security and how you can keep your personal information, technology and reputation safe as you interact online. I hope that this course will help you understand the key components of digital citizenship, how it can help students to understand these important concepts, and how we can all work together to make the online world as safe and respectful as possible.
