Understanding profiles

A profile can be thought of as the backbone of a road design. It provides the basis for all the corridor elevations and is a major component that forms the shape of the corridor design. In this video, we'll discuss some general concepts about profiles, so that you can understand more about how they're made and how they fit in to the overall design of a corridor. In the drawing in front of you, in the top view, I see the profile view. In the bottom left, I see the plan view. And in the bottom right, a three dimensional view of the corridor. In this three dimensional view, you probably noticed this heavy red line. And if I zoom in closely, you'll see that the red line passes through the crown of the road. Actually, what's happening here is that the road is being built around this heavy red line and this line is called the 3D chain. And it's created by combining the profile and the alignment together.
