Understanding corridors

Before building a road it's important to understand exactly what you're building and how it goes together. In this video we'll dive into the concept of a corridor. A three dimensional object that Civil 3D uses to represent a road design. Let's get started. A corridor is made up of several components. In my top left viewport I've got a plan view of a corridor. And if I zoom in more closely, and place my cursor near the centerline, you can see the alignment. The alignment represents the two dimensional path of my road. In the right viewport, we're looking at a profile. A profile represents the vertical path of the road or the change in elevation as I travel down the road. When you put an alignment and profile together it creates what's called a 3D chain, and a 3D chain is a path, a 3 dimensional path in space. If I zoom in closely to the 3D view of my corridor in the bottom right, you'll see the red dashed line become very clear. This is the 3D chain that is made by combining the…
