In this video, Russ takes you through some of the basics of routing. Take some time to review some of the information required for routing as a background for this course.
- [Narrator] Before we dive headfirst into the different…routing protocols and their function,…let's do a little bit of a review…on how the Layer 3 processes work.…The first thing we need to define is routing…or the process of routing itself…now this is a Layer 3 process used to move traffic…or data, from one local area network to another.…Now remember that a LAN is synonymous with a subnet,…VLAN, or broadcast domain.…And basically when we wish to leave a Layer 2 world,…or an ethernet, the world of MAC addresses.…
We need to move up to another Layer,…one that can provide addressing that makes sense…outside of our little local area network.…So if routing is all about moving data…to other LANs, the most important aspect of this process…is knowing how to get there.…Let's take a moment to discuss some…of the characteristics of routing.…Unlike the Layer 2 ethernet domain,…which relies on MAC addresses,…in this case we use IP addressing at Layer 3.…
Now there are other Layer 3 addressing types…out there in the world but IP addressing is most widely used…
