- [Instructor] Depending on the flavor of STPM use, convergence can be sped up with some additional Cisco proprietary commands. PortFast, UplinkFast, and BackboneFast. A standard access port with default timers will take 30 seconds to transition into the forwarding state, which can be problematic for certain hosts. Theoretically, a port that connects a single workstation shouldn't be capable of creating a loop. It's for this reason that the PortFast interface configuration command was created. It's applied per interface with spanning-tree PortFast, or set globally as default on interfaces with spanning-tree PortFast default. PortFast will transition a port instantly into the forwarding state, allowing a host to get on the network without delay. It will prevent a switch from sending topology change notifications BPDUs on state change of the port, which is a lot more resource friendly on the network.
