- I will be using the west switch, the one on the lower left, to demonstrate how to configure a Cisco 2950 using the command line interface. The first step in the process is to gain access to the switch's CLI. There are two ways that you can do this: in band, which requires an active network connection or out of band, which requires physical access to the switch. Typically, new switches are configured out of band.
So we're going to assume this a brand new switch which means it doesn't have any existing configurations and as such, we're going to need to access it out of band. Out of band requires you to have a console cable, which is a rollover Ethernet cable, meaning the wires on the opposite ends are reverse order. These are often made from a flat eight wire cable and they can be purchased at several online sources. The console cable is used to connect the console port on the back of the switch to an RS232 port on the west host.
Many of your computers, including laptops, no longer ship with a serial port, and as such, you would need to purchase a USB to a DB9 adaptor so that you can connect the router to the USB port on the PC. Like the console cable, you can purchase the USB to DB9 adaptors online at any computer store. Let me demonstrate how to set up the console connection from the west host to PC to the west switch in this Packet Tracer topology.
At the bottom of the screen you see there's a lightning bolt. The lightning bolt is the icon for all of the connection types that are available in Packet Tracer. The cable that we want is the console cable and that's indicated with this blue icon right here. Click on the console cable icon, click on the west host too. That RS232 represents the serial port, we click on that. Then we go up here and click on the switch, scroll up to the console port, click on the console port and that gives us a console connection between the west host and the switch.
