iBGP basics
- [Instructor] The network landscape can change considerably when adding more than one border router. Take this diagram for example when I have a network and I have more then a single upstream connection, I usually try to have those connections land on different border routers. This allows for equipment failure on either unit and I can do upgrades on a single router at a time without losing connectivity. 90% of my consulting work is creating hitless BGP infrastructures, just like this. Once more then one border router performing eBGP is introduced, there needs to be collusion between these two routers. This is where internal BGP or iBGP steps in. iBGP will share isp routes learned from each his own eBGP peers, and between the two of them they can decide what the best route is for learned destinations. In this way, if a user sends data to router one but router two has a better path to reach it, router one will pass that traffic over to router two for forwarding. iBGP sessions have a…
