For me, if I wanna go mountain biking after work, but there's limited sunlight in the evening in the wintertime, I'll wake up and start my day at six am and get done by three, so I can do that. And this is a benefit that I discuss with my employer during the interview process.
I encourage you to do the same. And what about your old, clunky computer that is seven years old? What type of infrastructure will this new employer provide you with to keep you productive? And something to think about these lines is also an ergonomic chair to keep you comfy. And let's talk about the coffee and snacks you would normally get in an office. The break room in your remote office is your kitchen, and you're the one doing all the grocery shopping.
Does this employer offer a food stipend each month? This is something to ask about. And, have you ever been in an office where a speaker will come in and do training for employees? Or an employer might even send folks to a conference to learn about industry-best practices. This falls under that umbrella of professional development, and the employer normally foots the bill. What about in a remote setting? What type of professional development is offered, and how might you gain access to it? Something to also consider is the number of vacation and sick days you have.
Oftentimes, different locations will have different laws requiring a certain number of sick days. Do you know what those laws are and does your employer? I've also worked at organizations that offer unlimited vacation days. Just as long as I have my manager's approval, I'm free to take time off as I need it. What is your potential employer's policy on time off? As you can see, there are a number of benefits to consider in a remote setting. You'll want to know what these are, so you can chat with your hiring manager about them.
Plus, it will show you have intimate knowledge of a remote work environment, which could add some bonus points.
