There’s an easy way to decrease shiny skin for your portraits. In this video, instructor Derrick Story shows how to do this in Capture One Pro 12.
- [Instructor] As I'm looking at her portrait here I notice that she does have a few little shiny spots. Normally those don't bother me much but I think I want to tone them down just for this exercise 'cause it gives me an excuse to come over to color balance where I like to do that. I'm going to go to the highlight area of color balance, you see that we have all these different areas we can work on, the master area, the midtone, shadows, we're going to work on highlight. I'm going to come to luminosity right here, and I'm just going to pull that down, and you see that we get rid of those shiny areas but we also lose some of the glow on her skin overall. I'm going wouldn't it be nice just to work on the shiny areas so I'm going to reset this. And I'm going to show you trick, we're going to add a luminosity mask, yes this is a perfect use for it. So I'm going to come up to layers and I'm going to do a new filled layer right there. I'm going to hit the m key so you can see it and then I'm going to go to luma range. Now what we're going to do is pull this over right here just so the mask is working on those highlights. Is that good? Now I want this to be soft, sometimes I want harder edges, sometimes I want softer edges, so I'm going to increase that radius, and we're just going to make this soft area like that. Keep that sensitivity down, keep the radius up right there. That looks nice. Okay now let's go back to our highlight in the color balance and make that adjustment. So I'm going to hit the m key again to turn that off, now we're going to pull this down, and look at that, isn't that nice? Very natural. They're still there, we haven't smoothed them out too much, and we haven't sacrificed the other areas. So that's using a luminosity mask in conjunction with the color balance tool to control things like hot spots and specific areas in the skin. Now just to keep things organized, I'm going to come up and I'm going to give this a name. That way if we add more layers later on we know which layer is doing what just by looking at the label. Now let's come back down here and let's do a before and after and see how we did. I'm going to hold down the option key which would be Alt on windows and click, there's our before, there's our after. It's subtle but I have complete control now over those shiny areas on her skin. So that is one of my favorite hints, in terms of combining the color balance tool with a luminosity mask to control areas like this that normally would require brushing. No brushing required, just use the mask, get those settings exactly the way you want and then just enjoy the final results.
