With the Master Slide Layout that most closely resembles what we're trying to attain, we now need to edit this Master Slide to make it absolutely perfect. Let's go ahead and take a look at a couple things. If I try to select, just in my slide view, one of these background colors, I can't actually select them. The only thing I'm able to select are the place holders for text as well as the placeholder for the image. In order to edit the slide itself in terms of these blue bars, I need to make changes to the master slide. To do this, I'm going to make sure my slide selected on the left-hand side. And the right-hand side in the Properties menu, I'm going to click Master Slide View.
Now before we do that, if you don't have your Properties menu open, I highly recommend that you have it open as we move throughout this video. You can open the Properties menu with the toggle button at the top of the screen. Let's go and click Master Slide View. So here we are actually looking at the layout of all the slides in this particular theme. If I scroll on the left hand side, I can find the caption and content left slide that we're currently using. Now because I'm in Master Slide View, if I take my cursor and I drag it over one of these boxes, I can see that all of the elements in the slide are now editable. But before we just make these changes, I have to think about the fact, would I ever want to use this particular slide layout again in the future? And the answer is yes.
I may actually find a need for this slide layout. So I don't want to just change the slide. What I'd like to do is to duplicate this slide. Edit the duplicated slide and then we'll apply that new master slide to our project. To get started with this, let's right click on the slide that we'd like to make a new master of. Here I'm going to select duplicate slide or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd+D or Ctrl+D on the PC. So now looking at my master slides on the left hand side, I have number four which is our regular caption and content left and number five I have another captioning content left.
Let's go ahead and change this to welcome slide. Type in the new name in the Properties menu will just allow me to quickly find this master slide for future use. Now that I have the name change let's go and make some changes to how this slide lays out. Now remember, we want to have a picture of our president of the university on the left hand side, and then some space for him to write a welcome message to our students. To get started with that I'm simply going to take this image box and shrink it down. I'll click on it, and then use the top right hand anchor point. I'm simply going to drag it over to the left hand side. And moved boxes around, a dashed line appears in the middle of them.
This dashed green line is telling me that I have it perfectly aligned with the box on the right hand side. I want to make sure that these boxes stay the same height. I'll now come over and I'll click the blue background for this text area. Once again I'm going to use one of these upper anchor points, I'm going to click and hold, and just drag it all the way over until the spacing looks correct. Again I'm using those green dashed lines to make sure that I'm lined up perfectly on the top, as well as the middle, for these boxes. When I have it lined out properly I'll go ahead and release, and I'll do the same thing here with our subtitle text, just drag it over, and I'll do the same thing with our caption text.
And I'll make sure the subtitle and the caption text align properly. So here we've gone ahead and created a brand new master slide that we can now use in our project. I'm going to go ahead and click back on the welcome slide on the left hand side and in the Properties menu, let's click film strip view to take us back to our presentation. Now right away it looks like, where'd our slide go? Because we've actually created a new slide and made a new slide and made changes to that. So the next step before we start adding content is to select our new master slide view, there's our welcome slide. Apply to the slide, and were now ready to add content.
