- In photography, there are many rules of thumb…and bits of conventional wisdom.…Sometimes they make sense and sometimes not so much.…And sometimes over time,…those rules become not nearly as important.…And such is the case with prime lenses versus zoom lenses.…A prime lens is one with a fixed focal length.…So in order to zoom with this lens,…I either need to get closer to my subject…or further away from my subject.…Versus a zoom lens, where with a turn of a dial,…I can adjust my effective focal length.…I can essentially get a closer view or a further away view…just by turning that knob.…
Now generally speaking, the conventional wisdom is that…a prime lens is sharper than a zoom lens.…That definitely used to be the case,…and in some cases, it's still the case.…But not always.…And so it's important to understand…the overall attributes of a given lens…and keeping in mind that in some cases you'll actually find…that a zoom lens might be sharper than…a comparable prime lens.…Also bear in mind,…because we're not able to zoom with a prime lens,…
