Using a telephoto lens for isolation in a scene

- Now, with telephoto lenses, I think an important place to start is isolation. Isolating a subject and truly bringing it out and making it clear and concise and simple. And in doing so, it may seem obvious. Hey, I've got a long lens, I can zoom in and really pull something out. But it's very under-utilized in the field and we're going to start with an example from Yellowstone National Park. This is Grand Prismatic Spring. Now, this is a viewpoint which really enables you to see the colors and just how big it is. You can see the people in the boardwalk up there and that gives you a great sense of scale. Now, if you're on the boardwalk, you can see very little because the steam's so intense, so this is the way to really take in the spring. This image here I like. It's got some nice puppy clouds. Really gives you the story of the spring itself. But I also wanted something a little more artistic, a little more abstract. Something that was different from here. And as I studied the spring,…
