Using a telephoto lens to compress distance
- Now at this point you may be thinking why don't I just take a shot with a standard lens and crop into it and pull a tiny section out that interests me? Well, there's a couple reasons why you may not want to do that. One is, you certainly lose a lot of quality and resolution. And if you want to print your work, you want to have as much resolution as possible. So again, I always teach and I promote to get the shot in camera the best you can, and do as little cropping as you can in post. Another thing about doing it in the field with the long lens is, the ability to really express your creativity. If you decide to crop something later, there's something fulfilling about being in the field and finding the right composition and capturing it there and not necessarily trying to figure it out in post. And there's another key element. Something's happening with your long lens that you're doing something to the scene and your compressing it. And I'm gonna show you exactly what that looks…
