Understanding and switching between measuring modes
- In order to get the best exposure your camera needs to accurately meter the scene. Now, most of the time your camera will get it right. But you can change the metering mode to help it out with making the right decision. The most common method that is used is Multi, which produces natural results in most situations. It evaluates the entire frame in segments before establishing an exposure. The camera considers the overall tonal distribution of the scene as well as composition. If you are using a newer lens, it can also analyze distance as a factor. The next method is Center. And what this does is measure the entire frame, but gives a bit greater emphasis to the object near the center. This is quite useful if you're shooting portraits and will really be useful if you've got a strong backlight or a very dark background. The last method is the Spot option. And this looks at a very small area. Approximately a four millimeter circle. Thats about 1 1/2% of the frame. So this is really only…
