From the course: Travel Photography: The Maine Coast

Introduction to the Maine coast

- [Voiceover] Hello, I'm Tim Grey. I'm on the coast of Maine, and what a remarkable coast it is. There are over 3,400 miles of coastline in Maine, and it's a rugged, beautiful, incredible coast, and wonderful to photograph as well. And with 3,400 plus miles of coast, that means you're going to find lots and lots of photographic opportunities. I'm about to venture out on a one week road trip. I happen to be a big fan of road trips. I like having the flexibility of a car that lets me get around and explore anywhere I'd like to go, and in Maine with a lot of coastline, there are certainly lots of places to explore. Of course I am going to be a little bit restricted in that I have a particular schedule to keep. I can't stay in any one place for too long, because I have a lot of ground that I want to cover, and I need to do it in about a week. And so I'm going to be at the whim of the weather. I'll be restricted based on the weather. I'm sure at some point, being the Maine coast even though it's summer time, I'm going to end up with some dreary weather. I'm sure I'll see some fog, some rain, but also as you can see right now, some wonderful light along the coast. So I invite you to join me as I photograph some of my favorite subjects in Maine. That'll include rugged coastline, some lighthouses to be sure, and anything else I find along the way. And along that way, I'll be sharing my thoughts as I'm photographing. Why I'm photographing a particular subject, or how I intend to approach that subject, the camera settings that I'll be using. In short, I'll be thinking out loud so that you can hopefully learn from all of the lessons that I'm sharing with you. And keep in mind of course that while I'm photographing and sharing these lessons along the coast of Maine, that doesn't mean that these lessons are only applicable if you come to Maine and photograph yourself. The same basic concepts will certainly apply for photography along the coast in general, and for a wide variety of other circumstances as well. And so, as you join me, hopefully you'll be informed, entertained a little bit, and you'll learn something, and maybe even be inspired to get out there and capture some images of subjects you're familiar with, or maybe new subjects as well.
