ISO (ASA)
- Earlier when I was talking about aperture versus shutter speed, I said that there's a third part of the exposure equation, and that's called ISO. At the time, I said, let's forget about ISO for the moment, it made it easier to understand aperture and shutter speed, but now we need to understand what ISO is and how it plays a part in this equation. It's a little bit easier to think about ISO if we go back to the days of film. Back in the days of film, you'd buy film that was based off of a certain number ISO or ASA, you may have seen that as well. ISO or ASA is essentially film sensitivity. The lower the number, the lower the sensitivity. So, a number like 100, 200, or 400, were very common ISO or ASA films. Those are the kind of things you'd find in grocery stores. If you went into a specialty store, like a photography store, you'd find ISOs that were lower, maybe 25 or 64, and higher, 1600, 3200 and so on.
