Gondolas in motion

- If you're visiting Venice, and photographing in Venice you're going to end up with pictures of gondolas, even if you didn't necessarily seek them out. If the water's in the frame, there's a good chance there's a gondola in the frame. But of course, gondolas are ubiquitous in Venice and you're probably going to want to specifically seek them out. And it raises an issue about common subjects. Whenever I'm photographing a subject, a place that I feel that just about every photographer has visited and photographed, I'm always trying to think about how can I photograph that subject in a more interesting and unique way. And so here in Venice, I wanted find an interesting way to photograph gondolas, so I got down here to the Grand Canal, right about sunrise, so that I could beat the crowds, and more importantly, get here before the gondolas have started working. And so the gondolas are here, they're covered in blue tarp and they're all set against these posts, not yet working for the day…
