- In the world of studio photography a v-flat is a really useful thing. A v-flat is basically two big, flat things that are attached together in the shape of a V. Let me illustrate this for you. I've got a piece of paper here. I'm just going to fold this in half. Now, imagine, if you will, that each half of this piece of paper was a separate big flat thing, and I've attached them down the middle like a book. So it opens like a book. I can now open this up, it will prop up, freestanding, on my studio floor. I can now put a light in the middle of this, blasting into the V, and that is going to reflect out and give me a big, huge, soft light source. Now this is all about using a v-flat as a light source to reflect the light and diffuse it. You could also use them to absorb light. If you paint it black, it can absorb light.
