Understanding how web fonts affect page weight

Responsive web design isn't just about making your layouts flexible, it's also about considering overall performance. To that end, the total weight of your page, and all the assets you're downloading to create that page, is an important consideration as well. It sometimes feels odd to consider our choice in fonts as affecting page weight and performance, but they most certainly do. The file size of any given web font can vary greatly. The total file size of a web font is determined by things like the number of characters included in that font, the amount of hinting or instructions that describe how those letter forms should be translated to the screen, and other things like special characters or character variations like ligatures, or swashes, and so on. So, it's no surprise that there's so much variation. Each type designer, or type foundry, can decide on which amounts of each of these things to include in their own version of a font.
