- [Instructor] We have an example of a legacy COBOL application. And whilst we yet to have little knowledge of the application to design our source code level, we do know that its business function is to manage personal information, providing for record creation, updates, inquiry, and reporting. Our first task is to select a migration target. One option for migrating is to continue with a mainframe solution using the latest mainframe COBOL technology. An example of this is the z/OS solution from IBM. If we move off the mainframe, one candidate first to consider is the use of GnuCOBOL on a Ubuntu platform, retaining the existing COBOL code in ice on files, exactly what we're currently doing. This would allow us to refactor the code to improve its maintainability and we could use a cloud based Ubuntu platform to run the solution.
