Different dialects of COBOL

- [Instructor] COBOL started its life in 1959, and the first language reference standard that was issued was COBOL 60. It was enhanced throughout the '60s and '70s, addressing incompatibilities in previous versions. COBOL 68 was the first version to be accepted by ANSI and subsequently by the International Standards Organization. COBOL 68 was enhanced with additional features and reissued as the COBOL 74 standard. This was in force for over a decade until COBOL 85 was issued as the last major update in COBOL until the turn of the century. COBOL 85 is now considered to be the legacy COBOL standard. A new reference version was issued in 2002, which removed the fixed-column A and B areas, but failed to gain any interest. The latest reference standard is COBOL 2014.
