Sketching the rough form on paper
- Sketching out a rough draft or the shape will help us synthesize our design goals, and aid us in the creation of a base model for our sculpt. Don't worry if you're not a good sketch artist, we're truly only interested in drawing the very basic outlines of the ship. Consider the following: what is the purpose of the ship? Is it a fighter, a space station, a battle ship, landing craft? What is the general form of the hall? Where do we want to have the protrusions like wings or engines? And what do we want them to look like in a general sense? That's the important part of this exercise really, is just knowing what the basic model is going to look like so we can prepare it for sculpting. So, I'm just going to start sketching and you will quickly realize that I am no kind of sketch artist. So, I'm going to start right at the nose of the craft, and this will be the cockpit. By the way, I'm doing this in Photoshop mostly so it's easier to show you. But you can do it on pencil and paper and…
