Parting surface

- [Narrator] Now that I have my dieline in place, or my tooling direction, next thing I need is a parting surface, or parting element. This could be a line. Often times, the styling department or an engineering department's going to provide to you where the parting element is going to be. The parting element basically defines where the tool separates. So, again, this is an injection molding. That means I have a cavity and a core, so basically two halves come together. Where do the two halves separate? So we need to define that. There's a couple ways that we can do that. One method is to use an extrapolation and another method is to untrim the original surfaces. So it could be a dance between using both. You may be able to get away with using one method or coming through and untrimming a surface and then extrapolating it because you need a larger parting element.
