- [Instructor] Another oftentimes necessary step is to create a relief along the parting edge and that relief is used for many purposes. Often times if you have two injection molded parts that are coming together at the parting surface, you want a little gap, basically molded into the part so it looks nice and clean. If you try to match two edges perfectly then things can get a little messy or you may have a slight little overhang. It might not be perfect. Tolerances, shrinkage, those kinds of things will affect the final result. Another reason is tool shut off. Often times you want a little groove around that outside corner for properly shutting off on the tool that way plastic doesn't flash out in the mold. Remember, you're injecting plastic into the cavity, so there's going to be a lot of pressure. And if it's just a net face to face joining of the core and the cavity often times you get a lot of flash out, and the way to clean that up is to make sure you have a little groove on…
