Why is urban design important?
- Our cities are facing serious issues. They're becoming more popular and more populous. And there are challenges that come with this. We're seeing widespread gentrification in neighborhoods. We're seeing displacement of existing residents. And we're seeing the impacts of climate change become more and more apparent. Things like poor air quality and urban heat island. They're exacerbated even more in low income neighborhoods and communities of color. But urban design is part of the solution. It's part of our city's toolkit that we can deploy that's going to help us create better places for people and help solve some of these issues. Now, is it going to solve everything? No. But in collaboration with other initiatives it can really make a substantial difference. We're going to use Portland, Oregon as our case study. In Portland we're experiencing all of these challenges, and we established guiding principles that are going to help us as we move forward as we start to plan our future…
