What is damping?

- [Instructor] In this video, we're going to talk about one of the most difficult areas of dynamics, which is involved with damping. Damping is present in all oscillatory systems, and it acts to dissipate energy from a system. Now in the real world, damping is very complicated. The actual damping mechanisms are not fully understood and certainly the interaction between different damping modes is difficult to measure, and it's difficult to predict what's going to happen. So we make some simple damping assumptions in Linear Dynamics. In normal modes analysis, we completely ignore damping per real normal modes. So damping dissipates energy, that's energy out. So if we have this little mass spring damper system, we pull it with initial little perturbation, you do not let go, then the little trace on the right hand side shows the motion and it damps out. A short duration loading, in this particular case, at the end of the input, it will decay to zero. So energy out decays in response to…
