Understanding the triple bottom line

- For any sustainability initiative, in any industry having to do with evaluating green strategies, it is important to understand the concept of triple bottom line. I'll never forget when early in my career, one of my peers told me that triple bottom line is the heart of sustainability. It's also called the three pillars of sustainability. A triple bottom line approach looks beyond the traditional financial bottom line and evaluates profits socially, environmentally, and economically. I myself find it easier to remember with the triple Ps, as coined by John Elkington: people, planet, profit. This framework provides a holistic measurement by which you can gauge successful implementation for sustainability. Let me give you an example. A common sustainability initiative in the construction industry is waste management. It's done by reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.
