Sustainability in manufacturing
- [Instructor] According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, sustainable manufacturing is the creation of manufactured products through economically sound processes that minimize negative environmental impacts while conserving energy and natural resources. I think we can take it a little further by defining sustainable manufacturing as an environmentally and socially responsible approach to design and engineering, production, distribution, and disposal of manufactured goods throughout their life-cycle. Environmental stewardship in manufacturing include: energy use optimization, water conservation, carbon emissions management, pollution prevention including water, air, and soil, waste reduction, virgin raw material use reduction, resiliency including the supply chain, biodiversity protection including wildlife and endangered species, and environmental management systems.
