- I'd like to address one last point. What about modeling? You may wonder, why even bother with drawings at all anymore? Haven't 3D models created and consumed directly on a computer largely overtaken and made drawings obsolete? It's valid question, and discussion on this is ongoing in many industries to be sure. But in my view, I think it negates the fact that a huge part of understanding of a design is shaped by the author of its deliverables. In choosing certain plans and views over others, a specific section cut here rather than elevation there, the author is telling us a story. Without that curation, just creating and handing over a 3D model would be like giving a first-person video game to somebody when they really wanted to read a novel. Sure, it might be fun to run around and go wherever you like, but sometimes, you just get lost. The value of drawings, like plans, sections, elevations, and isometrics lay in the fact that they are abstractions with the specific story to tell…
