- Okay, now that we've learned how to solder a basic component, let's talk about something a little more complicated, something like this. You will often come across an integrated circuit with lots of pins, this has a ton of pins. In my example, we're going to be looking at this little one here. This has eight pins on it, it's a through hole component and the challenge is it has eight pins and how do you solder that in. Well, in this particular kit I'm doing the minty boost here from Adafruit. It comes with a socket and a lot of times DIY kits will come with sockets for the integrated circuit and the reason for that, is if you solder the integrated circuit in and you do it wrong, you're in trouble, right, you've probably damaged the chip, it's hard to remove. If you solder this socket in and you add too much heat or anything goes wrong, it's a socket, you can kind of fix it, and then later you add the integrated…
