- [Narrator] The software that takes a 3D CAD model to commands to the printer is called a slicing program, or slicer. If you come from the machining world, you can think of it as the equivalent of CAM software. In this movie, we'll show Formlabs's preform. Preform is a proprietary software package from printer manufacturer Formlabs. Other printers may call things by other names, or have different capabilities, but you should be able to infer what they do from what we say here. First, bring in an STL file to the software by dragging it in. Next, orient the print. You can do that by clicking on the model and turning the ball, or by clicking on the appropriate icon and then using the orientation dialogue. As you modify the print, preform gives you a printability score. It watches for several issues. It checks for models being created in a way that has first layers in all touching the build plate.
