In the showroom of Architectural Materials, take a look at all the options available to clients looking for custom materials to use in their designs.
- We're at Architectural Materials in San Diego. And we're with Greg Romine. And then Greg's going to give us a breakdown of some of the samples that they have here. Now, Architectural Materials has a product line called Tactile, and it covers everything from glass to metals to composites and earthens. And you can see around us that we have hundreds of samples. We're going to give you just a few of these areas to sample. So, thanks again, Greg.
- Yeah, you're welcome. - Can I start with this one? - Sure. - This one's beautiful. I want to hear the story behind this guy. Hopefully you guys can catch the detail out of that one. Is that okay? Can you see the detail? So, Greg, tell us how this guy came out. - So, the architect wanted a very natural, organic looking material for the exterior of a building. So we researched sustainable materials, and this happens to be sal wood from India.
It's a renewable... It's a forested product that renews itself rather quickly. It's not as fast as bamboo, but pretty quickly. So, these were old railroad ties that we found in India. And we were able to treat them in different ways. And so it gave the facade of the building a very natural look. And it's quite beautiful. - Because it's a railroad tie, it makes it very good for outdoor use, then. - Yeah, it's already been acclimated to the exterior.
- And all this texture just from sand blasting? - Yep. - Wow. It's gorgeous. I'll put that back. It's heavy, too. I'm just going to pull up another one, here. This one's a surprise, so I'm going to pull it up, if you can see it. Let's see what we can find out about this guy. So, it looks like it's solid metal. - So, that's our Tactile Copper Finish, and it's actually metal that's suspended in a polymer, and then we can either polish it or brush it to different finishes.
But, it actually is cold to the touch. It is actual metal. But it's actually been... We've applied it on FRP, Fiber Reinforced Polymer. It's an amazing material and could be quite large. And far less expensive than copper. - [Scott] That's surprising. That's really cool. It's got FRP and he's got real metal on it. That's beautiful, it's really beautiful. It is really cold. It feels just like a solid piece of metal. - So, if it were not for shipping, we could make those panels 12 feet wide by 50 feet long.
- Oh, I'll take two. - All right. - And, of course, one of our favorites. You almost have to see that one in the light. You can actually see the transparency coming through this. Tell us how you pulled this one off, because this one is rich and is... - [Greg] Yeah, this part of our Tactile Glass Collection. What it is is it's two pieces of glass, and then we're able to suspend a metal fabric inside, and we're able to push the fabric around inside until we get the desired texture to it.
So, this happens to be a stipple pattern versus a veil pattern. - I love what it would do to environments. Just to get that sheer look without... You can manage and still have an industrial environment, where you don't have to worry about the dirt or the windows, or simply leaving the doors open and these other things. So you can just keep it beautiful all the time. - And still have some dimension. - Yeah. Oh. This one's real. Okay Check that out; look at that guy.
No surprise on the back, it really is real. [LAUGHING] How do we get to this guy? - This is a method of casting, called platen casting, where we actually cast the molten metal on a surface, and it could be a concrete surface or a steel surface. And what happens is the moisture and gasses get trapped underneath and it creates the texture on the molten metal. - Wow. Where would we see this? This is exterior facing? - [Greg] Exterior or interior.
Yeah, it's very tactile, clearly. - That's great. - So, it was used on the Museum of American Folk Art in New York, and we're using it on other projects throughout the world. - Well, thanks Greg, this is informative to say the least. I mean I really want to make a big point of this, because this is a very rich resource for all of us, for product designers, architects, to have somebody like you that will help us in all these areas between composites and glass and metal and earthens, and to be surrounded by all of these works.
I mean, all of these are inspiring. I mean, to see your materials in all these applications. And then whenever I come into the showroom I'm already putting in my list of samples. I need a kit; I need my big library kit of goodies, here. But, please check out the site. We're not doing it justice. You're going to see several types of glass, several types of metals, several types of composites, and the earthens are just as unlimited as you can imagine.
Greg's team, Architectural Materials... This might be hundreds, but I can see this going into the thousands, and tens of thousands of materials. I think you're only limited by your ideas.
