- There are many legal and regulatory requirements that govern the profession of architecture. But I'll cover three important ones. First, because our work affects the safety and welfare of the general public, architecture is a state-regulated profession. Much like a doctor or a lawyer must be licensed to practice in their particular field, so does an architect. In order to become licensed, you must complete a series of requirements that involve a combination of education, professional experience, and passing a series of exams. Some states, such as California and New York, have created additional examinations that focus on specific building and construction issues in their region. For example, in California, we have earthquakes, fires, and environmental laws that an architect must be aware of. Even after you become licensed, you must maintain your credentials through continuing education. Second, there are building codes that you must know and follow as an architect. These codes…
