Prototype to manufacturing a new product

- So Ben just told us one of the success stories here at LACI. He's speaking on behalf of Hive. - Hi, I'm Robert Rutherford. I'm the CO and co-finder of Hive Lighting. We manufacture high performance energy efficient lights for film, television, digital production. - Tell us about it. You talked about how you began and how you got to LACI. Can you take us through that journey, and how you got here. - Sure thing, so we started at LACI. That was myself and my co-founder, just the two of us at a single desk. We're now up to 18 employees at the company, and we're shipping out hundreds of lights. Our newest light is called the Wasp 100 C, it is a color changing LED light that's used on all kinds of film productions, television shows, live events and photography sets around the world now. We started it by building a 3D printed prototype here at LACI in the APC. We took that prototype and launched a kick starter campaign. Filmed a video and over the course of six weeks pre-sold 500 hundred units of this light at a thousand dollars each. That allowed us to get into manufacturing and production. So we're shipping out these now. This is the final finished version. This light uses up to 90% less power than it's equivalent lights. The bulbs last about 50 times longer. It's small, compact, light weight and has a great color quality that looks like natural daylight. - The materials here, this is a plastic one. You use that for 3D printing, and then this is a real metal. - This is a finished aluminum light. This 3D printed version we polished it up. In the kick starter video people thought is was a real thing, and we are ready to ship. It took about six months to get from prototype into full production. But, we're now shipping them out of our facility right here. - So, you started at LACI and you're still, sort of, at LACI. I see you're across the street. So what are they doing for you now? - They're doing everything for us. One of the really great advantages of working at LACI is we've been able to grow incredibly flexibly. As we've added team members, we've participated in trainings for the new equipment that's been added to the APC. We still do all of our design, prototyping and engineering on the LACI campus. This warehouse over here is for us and other manufacturing companies that are scaling up and need more space for assembly manufacturing et cetera. So, we're still very much a part of LACI on any given day. Half the company's is working at the La Kretz Campus, the other half's over here. We take a lot of steps going back and forth. - I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us. Love to hear the success story.
