- So, great cities need great streets, and in a growing city as we get more people, taller buildings, and less available space, the design of streets is going to be critical because they are the stage where urban life is going to happen. And as an urban designer, we are going to need to design the individual street, the way it looks and the way it functions, while simultaneously thinking about the role that that street will play in the larger transportation network. So, a great city needs to be a multimodal network, and by multimodal, I mean providing people with the variety of different ways to get around. Now, the reasons for this are fairly straightforward. One, with more people comes more demands on our streets, and if everybody chooses to drive, well, our system's going to fail 'cause we're going to be in bumper-to-bumper traffic all the time.
