- Initially created by the Cascadia Green Building Council, the Living Building Challenge certification was launched by the International Living Building Institute in 2006. Living Building Challenge promotes the highest standard of built environment sustainability, and it is the world's most stringent green building standard. It is applicable to new and existing buildings, single-family and multi-family residential, institutional, educational, medical, and commercial buildings. The Living Building Challenge is based on the metaphor of a flower that is rooted in place, and lives on resources available right there where it is. The philosophy of this Aspirational Rating System is to reconcile the built environment with the natural environment. To transform the buildings from masters of the natural environment to vessels that enable civilizations to create greater biodiversity, resilience, and regeneration.
