Laser scanning
- Laser scanning is a tool that has grown in popularity over the last 20 years. Because of this, the prices of these advanced tools have become more and more reasonable. The laser scanners have also become easier to use as the technology has advanced. Laser scanning is the process of shooting laser beams at a high rate and capturing the distance from the laser scanning unit to the point at which the laser hits the object then creates a catalog of those locations that can be translated into a point cloud or a representation of all those points in space. It is a highly accurate representation of that information, though the tolerances and quality can vary depending on the conditions or the materials that are being captured. For instance, if there is a highly reflective materials in the area that you're scanning or measuring, you might create anomalies in the scan, or if the area has a lot of interfering objects, you can get shadows on the scan.
