An example of planning for safety
- Let's take an issue like hazardous chemical communication. We call this HazCom in the U.S., and I can't tell you how many HazCom training sessions I've seen and sat through that give all kinds of information about the HazCom rules and talk about how these chemical hazards have to be communicated to workers and where workers can find that information, and that's all great. But most of them fail to actually get to the basic point of teaching that worker how to use a specific chemical safely in their job at their company. So as managers, I want to encourage you to start there. Look at the training your company is using. Is it generic? Does it just cover the rules? If so, there's probably an opportunity or actually a need for improvement. At a concrete company, for example, it's great that we have a training class on HazCom and that we teach everyone that they can find hazards on chemicals in the workplace in those safety…
