- [Instructor] Selecting the correct head protection is a little different than choosing other types of PPE like gloves. Head protection is a little different. We use head PPE, like hard hats or helmets, to protect us from impacts, but any type of head protection is only going to go so far in protecting us. Some impacts will be just too severe to be entirely mitigated by any hard hat or helmet, so taking steps to eliminate or greatly reduce the potential for these types of risks is critical in conjunction with using PPE for head protection. With that in mind, you also need to evaluate the potential hazards. You use head PPE to protect yourself from impacts. Generally, that impact can be from directly overhead, like when things or dropped, or it can come from the side. Helmets and hard hats come in all types and sizes, but the ones used for PPE in occupational settings should be marked as meeting certain testing criteria…
