Join Eric Wing for an in-depth discussion in this video Glue and Navisworks: Differences, part of BIM Tools Weekly.
- [Instructor] I used to wonder why we used Glue when we have Navisworks that does essentially the same thing, just a lot better. To be honest, I really only used Glue when I was doing videos for LinkedIn. But then Navisworks 2017 came around. It was in that version where I realized that you can open a Glue model directly from the cloud in Navisworks, manipulate it, and save it back. Also, right around the time of my discovery I wound up on two massive projects where we had to use it, because it was mandated by the owner.
So that being said, this week I'd like to focus on the two collaboration products I just mentioned, Glue and Navisworks, and how they're related. So we'll dial back a little bit. I'm going to jump into Revit and I want to make sure I have my Glue add-in. So if I go to my Add-Ins you should have a BIM 360 panel. If you don't have that we need to go find it. Now it's a little bit illusive, 'cause you can't just go to your Autodesk account and find it there, you have to go to BIM 360, which means you already have to be set up in BIM 360.
If you're set up in BIM 360 go to your BIM 360 account. Now with your personal profile if you click the drop down here notice that you can go to Downloads here. If you click that Downloads it's going to bring you to the BIM 360 website. Autodesk BIM 360 Glue. So we scroll down and we're going to see what we've got. Here it is, BIM 360 Add-in for Revit. Grab your current version, download it, and run with it.
Meanwhile, back in Revit if you go to the Add-Ins tab I want to Glue this, but before we do I want to make sure my view is set up exactly the way I want it. I'm going to make sure my Detail level is set for Fine, and I know that I'm missing a roof here and stuff, but I'm just going to Glue this model. So click Glue. Select your project, I'm going to go to LinkedIn Learning, I'm going to click Next. Now I can select a view, so I'm going to scroll down, it should be checked, but I just like to make sure. That's my current 3D view that I'm in.
A lot of times it's easier to just make maybe a Glue view where you call it Glue or call it what you want, but if we click Next we can rename this. So in the Name I'm going to call it ARCHITECTURAL. Now most importantly notice the file Type, it's a Navisworks cache file, so that makes a lot of sense. To New model. I'm going to Glue It. Now this'll take a couple seconds to go and you're going to start to see prompts. So it says it's uploading the ARCHITECTURAL model and you're model's being glued.
And it's going to glue it in the background. We'll let you know as soon as it's complete. Hit OK. Obviously, depending on your file size this can take a little while. The project I'm on now it takes probably about 10 minutes to complete. Let's click OK, we won't Go to Glue just yet. I want to Glue my structural model, so I'm going to do the same thing. Go to Add-Ins, going to go to Glue. Now sometimes it comes up with a different dialog, but that's OK, if we click Add Views, we click 3D, hit OK.
I'm going to rename this to STRUCTURAL. NWC, I'm going to Glue it up. Again, this takes a minute or two. And in a second you'll see some prompts. Updating STRUCTURAL, OK. And in a few seconds it's going to return another prompt saying it's been successful. This time we'll go to the project. Cool, let's Go to Glue. Sometimes if it's not open you'll have to run it, but that's fine, just let it happen. I'm going to go to my LinkedIn Learning and notice that recently added ARCHITECTURAL and STRUCTURAL.
Now I want to make a new merged model. I'm going to go New merged model, I'm going to pick both of these. For the Name we'll call it COMBINED and let's merge them up. Going to take a second or two. And there it is. I don't care for the grids, they might be turned on or off, but if you have your grids turned on, again, go back to your profile, then go to Options, and you can turn your Gridlines On or Off here.
Pretty cool. I'm going to go back to my LinkedIn Learning. Now I'm going to go back to Revit, I'm going to go to my mechanical model now, this time I'm going to go to Add-Ins, but I'm going to go to External Tools, and I'm going to go to Navisworks 2018. I'm going to save it as Mechanical, but first I'm going to go to my Navisworks settings, I want my Projects Internal to be my Coordinates. I don't want to Convert linked CAD files, I don't want to Divide my File into Levels.
I'm going to click OK, I'm going to hit Save, now I've got it. Now when I go back to Glue in my Models I want to click Upload models, now I'm going to go to Explorer and find where I'm keeping my files, and I can grab my Mechanical.nwc and just drag it right in. Click Upload and it's uploading it. The model's gluing, but that's OK. Let's jump into Navisworks and take a look.
In Navisworks I'm going to go to my BIM 360 tab. Now notice under Project I can click my builder button here, I can grab LinkedIn Learning, and click Next. Here's my COMBINED model. Notice my Mechanical's already up there, but I'm going to grab COMBINED, I'm going to click Open. There we have it. We are now actively in a model that is shared on the cloud for anyone with access to this site to see.
Any changes that are being made we'll be able to see automatically. But what's cool is we can go to Project Admin, this brings us to our LinkedIn Learning, it brings us to our BIM 360 Glue site, so notice that we can control all of our Glue directly from Navisworks, which is awesome. Another thing that's nice is we can click Append either on the Home tab or on the BIM 360 tab. If we click Append here's a model that's ready to be appended, so let's Append that.
It brings it in. Hit the Save button, notice that it saved it back up to the cloud, but it kind of did and it kind of didn't. So what we need to do now is we need to go back to our project, now I want to open up our COMBINED model. It's not in there, but notice where it says COMBINED there's a little exclamation point, so Eric Wing has updated Version 1 of 2. So if we just sync it up, Loading COMBINED, it's going to drag it in there.
That's a fantastic tool to be able to use, but just remember, when you add models in Navisworks you got to jump back to Glue and just refresh it, or if you close out it will refresh it the next time you open. I can see this workflow being used a lot in the future. The cloud is here, the days of uploading models to a file sharing site are going to start to vanish. This method is just way too easy.
