Join Eric Wing for an in-depth discussion in this video Exporting to CAD, part of BIM Tools Weekly.
- [Narrator] Sometimes there's a need to basically flatten our Revit and send it to AutoCAD. Let's demonstrate. I'm gonna open up any project that I want to export to CAD. Now if we go to the file tab, let's come down to export. Let's go to CAD formats, and then you can just choose the CAD format you want. I'm gonna choose DWG. Now we can select export setup. Go ahead and click on your browse button.
Here we're gonna make the translation from objects to layers. These generally follow the NCS National CAD Standard Layering. We can go to lines. We can either automatically generate line types, or we can choose any one we want here. I like to just automatically generate 'em. Of course, our patterns, what's gonna happen is our fill patterns in Revit are gonna become hatch patterns in the drawing file.
We can actually load DWG hatch patterns from-- You can choose a location. So a lot of times I have clients with custom dot PAT files. Texts and fonts. Of course our colors, generally it's an index color. Solids, I like to use polymesh. Of course, units and coordinates. And just general stuff.
I like to export rooms, spaces and areas as polylines. Of course, this is important. We need to know what format they're in. You'd think they'd have AutoCAD 2019, but they do not. Click okay. Now for the export, we can either do current view sheet only, or we can do in session view sheet only, which is gonna be the same thing basically. But in session view sheet set, if we hit the dropdown here, we can show and list sheets in the set.
We don't have a set, so let's make one. Click on new set. We'll call this floor plans. Click okay. Now instead of all views and sheets in the model, let's just go to sheets in the model. Now select these three, let's go to next. Now we can save it to a target folder.
I'm just gonna put 'em wherever. I'll go to my documents folder. Now I like to uncheck export views on sheets and links as external references. I want it to basically be one flat sheet. File name prefix, so what we can do here, files of type, 2018, DWG. And for the naming, I like to go automatic short. Now click okay. There we go. Now if I go to my documents folder, what's gonna happen is Revit will export PCP files, so essentially the drawing files are the ones we want.
Normally I'll just delete the PCP files. There you have it, here's our three sheets in DWG format.
