- So where do we start? Well, a good place to start is with a look at the tools and materials that will be required. If you're interested in traditional hand drafting, then you'll need some paper, a drawing surface like a drawing board or drafting table, triangles and straight edges, pens, pencils, erasers, and a number of other items as well. Here are some of the basic items that you'll want to have. So let's start with the drawing surface. My drawing board has a wooden surface, and that's not always ideal to draw on, so you're going to want to put some sort of a smoother surface on top of that. Now, the most economical thing that you can do is just get a simple piece of illustration board. Now, I have one here that's just a thin piece of illustration board, and it's got a white side and a black side.
