Join Eric Wing for an in-depth discussion in this video Creating an area plan, part of BIM Tools Weekly.
- [Instructor] In this video, I'd like to create an area plan. I'm gonna open up whatever model it is that I want to create an area plan in. I'm in level one here in my model. If you go to view, plan views, let's come down to area plan. For the type, I wanna go with gross building.
we can create a bunch of area plans, I'll just grab level one, I'm going to click okay, automatically create area boundary lines associated with external walls and gross building area, oh yeah, let's say yes, so now we have it, it's one huge area. We can tag it, if we go to annotate, we can grab an area tag right here, if I click area tag, it's a quick way to get the entire area of your model, not sure why I put two in, now we can start slicing this up, to do that we'll go to the architecture tab, notice we could've created an area plan here as well, or a specific area, but I wanna grab area boundary, we can either pick lines, we can draw lines, we can do whatever we want, generally, I like to just draw 'em in, so I'm gonna click line, and I'm gonna come maybe from this intersection, to this intersection, notice that is significantly trapped down that area, I'll go with this one here, to this one here, I'm gonna click on my select elements by face, I wanna turn that off actually, so I'd like to be able to select my area that's in here, if I hover over part of it, I can hit tab a couple times, and then I got it, here's my area, for the number, I'll type in o o two, for my name, I'll call it corridor, I'll click apply, hit escape a couple times, then I'm gonna add another area, so if I click area, I'll just select area here, and I'm gonna put one here, and I'm gonna put one here, I'm gonna call this corridor all caps, I'll call this one main building, and I'll call this west addition, there you go, these areas are calculated, now what we can do is if we go to analyze, 'cause we can grab a color fill legend, I click that, I'm gonna put it right here maybe, space type, areas gross building, color scheme, gross building area, click okay, now, I wanna change this up so I'm gonna grab my area legend, click edit scheme, for the color, instead of area type, I think it'd go with name, colors are not preserved, that's fine, these are pretty rough colors, so we can always change the colors to whatever we want.
I live in Syracuse so I'm gonna go with the Syracuse University colors. I'm not sure what to make this one. I think we switch to gray, there we go, click apply, click okay, so now we have our area legend. That's how you do it.
