Construction vs. manufacturing

- When talking about or criticizing productivity in construction, you will often see the construction industry compared to other industries, such as manufacturing and agriculture. These are brutal comparisons, because when you take all three industries and compare their productivity gains over the last four decades, construction is not just dead last, it's basically flat, meaning there have been no improvements in construction productivity, while manufacturing and agriculture have improved tremendously, thanks to things like automation, technology, and new processes. Now, that's a dismal statement, because if you carry it out, I think it's fair to say that this means that nothing we have done over the last 40 years in the construction industry has actually translated into gains in productivity.
