Understanding variable scope: C Essential Training: 1 The Basics

Variables used in a function belong to the auto class, meaning their values are private to the function and discarded when the function quits. The auto keyword is optional when declaring an auto variable. Variables external to a function are declared by using the extern class. External variables are global, available to all functions in the source code. The static class of variable retains its value after a function quits.
