Coaching and data science

- [Instructor] People aren't too surprised…if they learn that general managers rely heavily…on statistical data in deciding who to hire for a team.…They're not on the field or a court…so that cerebral approach…doesn't intrude too much on gameplay.…After all, they wear suits and they work in an office.…However, a lot of people have a different reaction…when it comes to coaches who are out there with the team,…when calling plays and putting…athletes in and out of the game.…There's the idea that while the general manager…may be all head driven, the coach is driven instead…by gut feelings and intuitions about the game.…

And while that romantic image is very attractive,…everybody knows that coaches are constantly…getting information from their assistant coaches…and coordinators and referring to clipboards…of lists and data.…So despite the image, data is…already heavily integrated into coaching.…The question is are all of us ready for algorithms…to play even more of a role in our favorite sports?…That's where data science and coaching come together.…
