The way we are working isn’t working for us

- The way we work is not working for us, and it's primarily because our work practices have been established in the 17 and 1800s. Ever since Adam Smith argued that the division of labor would make enterprises more productive, all of our leadership and management practices have been about control and efficiency. Now there's nothing wrong to want to have more productivity or to gain efficiencies, but that sort of short-term look in today's environment is not sustainable. In the 21st century, we care for our organizations to be sustainable. And the pathway to that level of sustainability goes through an organization's capability for adaptability and leadership's capacity for resilience. So if you're a people leader inside of an organization, you really want to think about the agility of your system and having a longer view. How are you going to do that? Well, you can ask yourself five specific questions. The first one is, why does my business exist in the first place? What's the need that we are trying to address here? The second one is, what's our key purpose beyond profit generation? The third one is, what's our differentiated value at large? Which products or services are we offering and why should anyone go for that over another? The fourth one is, whose lives or experiences are we looking to impact? And the fifth one, probably the most important one, is what's the legacy we are looking to leave behind?
